The Grand National is a race synonymous with a horse called Red Rum, the horse was trained on the beaches of Southport and went on to win 3 Grand Nationals. Starting with Liverpool Day on the 12th April, followed by Ladies Day on the 13th April and the 2012 Grand National on Saturday the 14th April. Burscough Wharf Celebrations One year on from its grand opening, Burscough Wharf marks its first anniversaryr weekend of events, activities, celebrations and live art. The celebrations will begin on Friday evening, (17th February). On Saturday The Wharf will host Burscough’s first ever ‘Transport Festival’. Merseyside Transport Trust will bring two of the buses down to the Wharf for display in the courtyard.
Adding to the festivities throughout the day will be live music performed by students of resident musician and music teacher Adam Christopher Music, whilst entertainment for the children will include Jesters, free children’s face painting and balloons. On Sunday The Wharf hosts its Winter Food & Drink Festival. Sunday’s traders include the Port of Lancaster Smokehouse, Chocolate Magic, Ormskirk Bee Keepers, County Cheeses, Sam’s Seafoods, Pendle Pat-a-Cakes, Choco Lori, Olliviccio, Farmers Wife Preserves, Belpasso Oil & Wine Co., Country Hog Roast and many more. Saturday’s activities run from 10am – 4.30pm Sunday 10am – 4pm. The Olympic Flame will pass through the borough on Friday, June 1, 2012, as the torch travels through Southport, Ainsdale, Formby and Crosby Promenade Sefton is one of more than a 1,000 villages, towns and cities announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic Flame will be carried by Torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. The 70 day Olympic Torch Relay, will start at Land’s End, Cornwall on May 19, 2012 where it will then travel an estimated 8,000 miles around the UK.
